1. When analyzing the verse from Deuteronomy at the opening of the novel, how does it set the stage for the plot? Identify the characters who represent the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow as stated in the verse.
2. Describe the relationship between Hannah, Sammy, and Leslie. Is the tension between Hannah and Leslie typical of a mother-in-law and a daughter-in-law relationship? Do these personality differences influence the decision making of each character once their typical lives have changed dramatically? Do childhood influences affect that decision making process for each character?
